Diamond at the Market

My husband and I went down to the local 4th Ave a while back.  We found a cute little street market going on so we just had to stop and take a look. There were many things that caught my eye, but this rocking chair was the only thing I couldn't get my mind off of.

It had a leather seat with a large crack in it. I loved the detail on the back rest, and could tell it was well made.
After trying to decide if we could fit it in our little car, we bought it and took a gamble. Thankfully my dear husband fit it in perfectly!

When we got it home I turned to Facebook to tell me what color it should be. After an outstanding vote for a pop of color, I decided to keep it the same red, with just a bit of touch up.

I sanded down the areas that were really bad, the arms had little color left to them. I wanted to keep as much of the original patina as possible! This was the real deal crackled, antique look that we always try to recreate!

I was about to head to the paint store when I remembered I had picked up some red paint "oops" paint that had been "messed up" at the store. I love searching through oops paint because it is deeply discounted!  But many times I find amazing colors that just weren't spot on for the customer who had ordered it.

Amazingly enough, the red oops paint matched perfectly with my rocking chair!

I touched up any spots that needed more color, then distressed them to blend in with the original patina.

The chair then got 3 coats of polyurethane to seal in all the goodness

For the seat, I cut a piece of plywood to fit, and tore out the old leather seat. I wrapped the wood with extra padding and then with a medium shade of linen fabric. To finish off the edges, I added a welt in matching fabric.

After the poly was completely dry, I attached the new seat to the rocking chair and stood back to admire the gorgeous finish. I love that I was able to keep the majority of the original finish, but make it fresh again.

Thank you for stopping by! We would love to hear from you and hope you have an amazing rest of your day!
